[Civil War] Banner of Liberty Periodical. Vol. 8, No. 40, eight pages, 11.5" x 16", Middletown [New York], October 1, 1856. A weekly paper devoted to Unionism, the subtitle reads, "An Independent Weekly Newspaper, at One Dollar per Year, Devoted to the Cause of Civil and Religious Freedom, and the Defense of Man's Natural Rights." The election of several so-called Black Republicans in the state of Maine led to rumblings of disunion. In an article titled "Maine For Disunion," The Banner of Liberty reports:

" her solemn vote...decided for sectionalism and disunion." And, "It is indeed a solemn event when a great State like Maine, whose heart has ever beat time to the Music of Union, rejects that Union, and proclaims...that she is prepared to sever the bonds which have united us as one people..."

Election of candidates from the new Republican Party, founded in 1854 and who were opposed to the spread of slavery, in the mid-nineteenth century sent shock waves throughout the political landscape of the United States. The election of a Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, led to the secession of the southern states and to civil war. Creased vertically and horizontally; edge is chipped and toned on the intersection of crease and edge. Very fine condition.
