    [Civil War]. Autograph Manuscript "Memorandum of the conditions of the Surrender of the Naval Forces serving under the command of Commodore E. Farrand in the waters of the State of Alabama..." Two pages, 8" x 12.5", Sidney, Alabama, May 4, 1865. Upon the outbreak of the war, Ebenezer Farrand resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy and served in the Confederate navy with distinction. He had the dubious honor of surrendering the Confederate navy to Acting Rear Admiral Henry K. Thatcher near Mobile on May 8, 1865. The document spells out six conditions of surrender including officers and men to be paroled, all vessels of war, equipment, guns, etc. turned over, men paroled be allowed to return home, surrender of property not to include side arms or personal baggage of officers, time of surrender to fixed, and after the surrender transportation and subsistence to be provided. A period fair copy bearing secretarial signatures. A fine, bright and legible document with the usual fold creases
