    [Civil War] and [Military Burial]. Union Soldier's Letter. Four integral pages, 5" x 8", Shell Mound [Tennessee], February 4, 1864, to his sister "Hatt" describing the procedure of burial in the Federal army during the Civil War. Folds. Else fine.

    More Information:

    He says, in part: "His name was Alfred W. Bush...I helped dig his grave. he was buried in Military the Grave only 8 men and a Corp are allowed in the Ceremonies of Private. In the first place the Drum Marches ahed [sic] of the Coffin and playes [sic] the Death March...after the Drum Corps the Bearers march Caring [sic] the Coffin, after the coffin marches the Corporal and two file of men with Reversed Arms after them the Major of the Reg marches just ten paces in the rear. on ariving [sic] at the Grave The Corporal commands Halt, and Shoulder Armes, and as the Bearers lays the Coffin over the Grave he command Present Armes [sic]. He then orders them to Shoulder Armes [sic] when the Coffin is let down into the Grave. The Drums gives one continued Roll then the grave is coverd [sic]. The Corporal orders his men to load at will Load When the Peaces [sic] are loaded he orders Ready Aim Fire. They fire three volleys over the grave then March back to camp."
