    Description

[Civil Rights]. Group of Ephemera comprised of over ten letters, pamphlets, and other documents spanning the years 1956 through 1963. This superb collection of items includes letters from prominent civil rights activists such as Carl and Anne Braden, featuring a transmittal card, 5" x 3", initialed by Carl Braden, in full: "We thought you'd like to see this memo Anne sent out in connection with my prosecution in Atlanta. We'd appreciate your saving it and giving it to Dr. King when he returns. Thanks much." Included is the memo from Anne Braden concerning the arraignment of Carl Braden "on a charge of contempt of Congress." Years before, the Bradens had been barred from finding jobs in Kentucky because of their civil libertarian views and took work as field agents for the Southern Conference Educational Fund (to whom this memo is addressed). Do to their affiliation with the civil rights movement, Carl was called to testify "before the House Un-American Activities Committee at hearings in Atlanta in July [1958]." According to "200 Southern Negro leaders . . . the real purpose of this investigation would be to smear the integration movement and those working in it as 'subversive.'" At each instance, Braden refused to answer the committee's questions, believing that "to answer their questions . . . would have been to cooperate in the thing that we feel has weakened the most precious contribution our democracy has given humanity, the idea of personal freedom." For his refusal, he was charged with a misdemeanor, placed on trial, and was found guilty in February 1959. He was sentenced to twelve months in prison. The case made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court [Braden v. United States, 365 U.S. 431 (1961)]. The verdict was upheld in February 1961. [and:] [Jim Dombrowski]. Southern Conference Educational Fund: Flyer Regarding the Revival of State Sedition Laws. One page, 8.5" x 14", New Orleans, June 5, 1959. Dombrowski (1897-1983), a white civil rights activist and minister, warns that "Dangerous bills reviving state sedition laws are pending in the United States Congress which could be used against Negro and white ministers, and all others working for integration in the South. Under these laws . . . each state could define sedition and subversion as it pleased." He goes on to reference Carl and Anne Braden who were "sentenced to 15 years in prison" for buying a house in an all-white neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, and then selling it to a black family. He concludes by urging citizens, both black and white, to write their senators.

Also included are documents involving the House Un-American Activities Committee, the Institute on Non-Violent Resistance to Segregation, et al. A fantastic collection of items from a period of intense social change. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
