[Capture of Savannah]. State Journal Extra. One printed page, 4.25" x 17.5", n.p., December 26, [1864]. Gen. William Sherman began his Savannah Campaign, more commonly known as Sherman's March to the Sea, on November 15, 1864, when his army left Atlanta for the port of Savannah. He reached the outskirts of Savannah on December 10 and settled in for a ten day siege. On December 21, the mayor surrendered the town.

In an extra edition printed the morning of December 26, the State Journal announced the "Glorious News," in a dispatch from the War Department to Maj. Gen. John Adams Dix, in part: "A dispatch has been received this evening by the President from Gen. Sherman. . . . [announcing] the occupation of the city of Savannah and the capture of 150 guns, plenty of ammunition and about 25,000 bales of cotton." Also included is a reprint of the dispatches from Gen. Sherman to President Lincoln and from Maj. Gen. J.G. Foster to Gens. Grant and Halleck. Mounting remnants are seen ghosted on the recto at the corners and along the edges. Scattered foxing.
