[Benjamin Simms Herring]. Sidney Smith Lee Document Signed With Related Documents of a Confederate Naval Officer Assigned to the Ironclad CSS Virginia (Merrimac). Included are two Civil War dated documents, the first is signed by Captain Sidney Smith Lee on Confederate States Office of Orders and Details Navy Department letterhead, dated September 27, 1864. The orders regard the detachment of Herring from duty at Shreveport, Louisiana, and assigning him to the command of Flag Officer Ebenezer Farrand at Mobile, Alabama.

The second document, in Herring's hand, is dated February 25, 1865 and is essentially a complaint made by Herring for punishment received for allowing three men to escape the CSS Morgan while on his watch. He writes in part: "I can only say when a vessel is lying at a wharf and a man wants to run away, he can and will do it and not be detected in the act...I was relieved after 10 days quarantine; and will think to the last moment that I was punished unjustly."

The last document, one page, 8.5" x 11", on E. V. White & Co., Inc. letterhead, Norfolk, Virginia, September 20, 1915, signed by E.V. White, an assistant engineer on the CSS Virginia. It reads, in part: "This is to certify that Benjamin Simms Herring was 2nd. Assistant Engineer on the Confederate Steamer Virginia, better known as the Merrimac during its life and great fight of March 8th & 9th. 1862, and was with her until May 12th, when he assisted in her destruction. Was one of the first officers ordered to her, and did faithful and valuable service against the Fleet and Monitor of the United States...". The document bears the notary seal of the state of Virginia. All examples with the exception of minor toning and old fold creases are in fine condition.
