[Battle of Williamsburg]. Union Soldier's Letter. Six pages, 5" x 7.75", "Camp near Williamsburg [Virginia]," May 6, 1862. Writing to his mother just two days after the fall of Yorktown and one day after engaging the rebels at the Battle of Williamsburg, this Union soldier gives a detailed account of his regiments' actions in the latter engagement: "Our advance division (Gen. [William F.] Smith) engaged with the rebels about 3 miles this side of Williamsburg . . . and after fighting for some time were driven back about a mile . . . they were reinforced by a new brigade and drove the rebels back to where they first engaged them. Then came hard fighting . . . We arrived at the place where the battle first commenced about 2 hours before dark . . . We could see them bringing the wounded & killed from the field . . . we were marched off to where the battle was raging and entered the woods on the other side of which our weary soldiers were fighting. The shell & bullets were whistling at a great style through the trees . . . we were ordered to lay down, and schirmishers [sic] were sent out to entice the rebels into our ambush . . . but they did not come near enough to us to have a good range to them. All the time they were fighting only about 300 yards to the left of us! We were kept here all night in front of them and expected they would attack us every minute. . . . This morning we found that the rebels had been retreating all night, and our cavalry have been bringing in a large number or prisoners to day!" Spots of light soiling. Folds.
