[Battle of Olustee]. Union Newspaper: The Palmetto Herald. Vol. I, No. 1. Four integral pages, 10" x 14", Port Royal [South Carolina], March 3, 1864. The city of Port Royal had been under Federal control since November 1861 and was one of the first attempts by the North to reconstruct the ways of their Southern brethren. Believing that there was a need for "a truthful record of all news . . . in the Department of the South, and among the fleets of the South Atlantic Squadron," and with promises to "support the Government, advance the interest of the Army and Navy and entertain our readers," the Palmetto Herald was born.

This, the inaugural issue, contains a lengthy description of the Battle of Olustee [Florida, February 20, 1864] with nearly two full pages of Federal casualties and recent news from the fighting around Charleston, "At last accounts our artillerists at the upper end of Morris Island were still firing on the city . . . The rebels at intervals reply sharply to our fire, but very rarely doing any injury." With several period advertisements. Folds are weakened with minor paper loss of the first page at the intersections. Scattered spots of foxing.
