    Description

    [Battle of Gettysburg]. Subscription Slip and Circular for Sale of the Painting "Battle of Gettysburg." Two partially printed, integral pages, 9.5" x 4.5", [New York], n. d. [circa 1870]. In 1869 Bachelder commissioned noted artist James Walker to create the monumental painting "Battle of Gettysburg: The Repulse of Longstreet's Assault." Producing engraved reproductions of the painting, Bachelder sent out subscription sheets for his work which read, in full: "A parlor sized chromo lithograph steel engraving from the above Painting is about to be published by John B. Bachelder, New York, India Proof Price $50. Also a plain lithograph print price $10. Proof $15. Colored $25. An electrotyped edition. Price $5.00 artists proof (limited to 200 copies) Price $100. The undersigned would like the number and style of the above placed against their names." Both subscription sheets included are unused. Toned folds.

    With a four integral page, printed circular, 5" x 7.5", containing a letter from General Rufus Ingalls, chairman of the Society of the Army of the Potomac, dated June 9, 1869, to Bachelder requesting that the painting "...be placed on Exhibition in the Grand Opera-House...on the Day and Evening of July 5, and respectfully ask on what terms the picture can be had on that occasion." Also printed in the circular is Bachelder's letter accepting the invitation of Ingalls and an announcement that the painting is to be produced on a smaller scale as a "...fine steel engraving..." with a price guide in Bachelder's hand at the bottom.


    More Information:

    With the original transmittal envelope addressed to General Thomas H. Ruger (1833-1907), who saw action at the Battle of Antietam and led troops at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He remained in the regular army after the war and was breveted brigadier general for his actions at Gettysburg.
