    [Battle of Chancellorsville]. Arthur Harmon Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 8" x 12", Falmouth [Virginia], May 22, 1863. Arthur Harmon was a private in the 17th Maine Infantry when he wrote home to his parents about the last battle that he was involved in, the Battle of Chancellorsville. He writes that he had not taken part in the action for seven days, but "...on Saturday night...the Battery i am in was Ordered up...the Batteries was just taking Phission in the edge of the woods and that core [sic] came a Battling out of the woods...[General Joseph] Hooker liked to got kiled [sic] thare [sic]...he went right out in Forward of them Our Boys and says to them life is as sweet to me as to you But less [let's] give them some..."

    After a lull in combat, "General Lee sent to hooker to get Permission to bury their dead hooker sent him Back that they would give them 24 hours to Surender [sic] in..." "Thare [sic] was a lot of wounded Burned up alive," he says, "they were suporting [sic] Batteries right Between the to [two] fires the Rebils [sic] and ours it was a terible [sic] thing to burn them alive...thare [sic] was a Rebel niger he Belonged to the Rebil [sic] Calvery so he said he was wounded to...we lost 10.00 or 15.00 thousand as near as they can judge and the Rebils [sic] lost 2500 to 3000 thousand and they said that our artillary [sic] cut them up terribly..."

    Arthur Harmon was killed six weeks later on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Smoothed folds are weakened with areas of separation and minor loss of paper. Overall toning with spots of staining. Chipped edges. Housed in a red cloth over board chemise with slipcase quarter bound in red leather and red cloth with titles and decoration on the spine in gilt.
