[Battle of Bentonville]. Large Archive Associated With Union Soldier Jesse H. Rice Who Lost an Arm in the Fighting at Bentonville, North Carolina, March 19, 1865. Jesse Rice of Cheshire, Connecticut enlisted as a private on August 22, 1862 and mustered into "A" Company of the Connecticut 20th Infantry. The 20th served with distinction at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Rice lost his right arm in the fighting at Bentonville on March 19, 1865. Included in the archive are three wartime letters written to his sister, though none make mention of specific battles, they do mention dead and wounded friends of his regiment. During convalescence, Rice for a short time (August 22-September 8, 1865) kept a diary. At the top of the page is the note "Some of my first writing with left hand 1865". One entry is particularly interesting as he writes: "Got my transfer to DeCamp Hospital David's Island for purpose of getting an artificial arm." The archives includes a number of post-war documents from various pension offices as Rice apparently had to struggle to get his due. Also included are his original discharge document, several GAR programs, membership cards, etc. Most striking however is a tintype of Rice seated, with his shirt arranged to show the stump of his right arm. A graphic reminder of the sacrifice and suffering of the common soldier of the Civil War.
