[Atlanta Campaign] and [Battle of Franklin]. Annie Gordon Thomas: Group of Six Letters Including Two Letters with Battle Content. The majority of these letters are addressed to Annie Gordon Thomas, the wife of Maryland secessionist, Dr. John Hanson Thomas. Of note is a six page autograph letter from the wife of Capt. John B. Ogden, 4.75" x 8.25", Richmond, February 16, [1865], to Mrs. Thomas regarding the latter's son, Confederate Capt. John Hanson Thomas', and the rumor of his injury at the Battle of Franklin, in part: "You can scarcely imagine how rejoiced I was at the good news your letter contained concerning your son's safety since the Franklin battle, I had received a message from outside, that there was a report that Hanson Thomas, Major Henry Robinson and my brother had fallen in the Franklin battle . . . I now find the mistake was made in this way, some one hearing that six of Loring's staff had their horses shot under them immediately thought the officers were also killed . . . I heard as late as January 7th from my brother, all were safe and well in Corinth on that day, and all has been quite since, no fights."

Also included is a four page letter from Capt. John Hanson Thomas, 5" x 8", Atlanta, August 27, 1864, addressed to his aunt just six days before the fall of Atlanta to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, Capt. Thomas writes of the bewildering actions of the Federals, in part: "The enemy since day before yesterday have been altering their lines and vacating positions that we supposed to be impregnable; consequently much cannonading on our part and advancing of skirmishers to ascertain their whereabouts and endeavor to develop their intentions. They commenced to withdraw on their right and also news reached as the same time that they had disappeared on the other wing, tho' in our front . . . they were in force. These two movements have somewhat mystified us all. Last night they drew in their lines on the right centre, still holding a strong position on the left centre: probably it is understood at Genl. Hood's Hd. Qrs., but by no one else. It is one of three things, either to mass their army and attack a point; straighten and contract their line, or retreat across the Chattahoochie river . . . I captured eight Yanks but could gain very little information from them. It is uncertain yet, what Sherman will do."

The other letters include a Gen. Albin F. Schoepf letter signed regarding clothing, a Lt. Sidney B. De Kay letter concerning the use of stamps by the Confederate authorities, a William Schley letter regarding the procurement of a pass, and a letter from the Office of the Provost Marshal, Department of Virginia and North Carolina, regarding a trunk of clothing she wishes to send to her brother. All of the letters are in very good or better condition.
