    Description

    [Abraham Lincoln]. Willie Lincoln Printed Funeral Address with the original transmittal cover addressed by Mary Todd Lincoln. Four pages of a bifolium, 7.25" x 9", Washington, D.C.; February 24, 1862. Printed on mourning stationery, "Delivered by Rev. Dr. Gurley on the occasion of the Death of William Wallace Lincoln." Accompanied by the original transmittal cover, addressed in the hand of Mary Todd Lincoln to Mrs. J.T. Stuart and postmarked April 9, 1862. John Todd Stuart was Mary Todd Lincoln's cousin and Abraham Lincoln's law partner. The franking signature is not in the hand of Abraham Lincoln. It is a secretarial franking signature, possibly in the hand of Mary Todd Lincoln.

    Willie was Abraham Lincoln's third son, born December 21, 1850. Both Willie and his younger brother, Tad, contracted typhoid fever in the early months of 1862. Although Tad recovered, Willie was more severely affected by the disease and passed away on February 20, 1862, at the age of 11. His death hit his parents extremely hard, so much so that his mother kept to her bed for three weeks and was unable to attend her son's funeral.

    Condition: The printed address has a flattened fold at the left spine. Minor soiling. Usual wear and soiling to the envelope. The black wax presidential seal on verso has been broken but is still intact. Small tear at the left edge of the envelope.
