    Description

[Abraham Lincoln]. General Orders No. 252. One page, 4.75" x 7.5", War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, July 31, 1863. Issued by President Lincoln, these orders outline a principle of treating prisoners of war, especially those of color, with civility, declaring: "To sell or enslave any captured person, on account of his color, and for no offence against the laws of war, is a relapse into barbarism, and a crime against the civilization of the age." Lincoln later expresses an "eye-for-an-eye" policy regarding the killing or enslavement of Union soldiers.

Condition: Smooth vertical fold, slight wear at the bottom edge.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
