[Abraham Lincoln and the Wide Awakes]. Young Men's Republican Union: Report and Letterhead Sheet. The Young Men's Republican Union was one of a number of Northern groups, known as the Wide Awakes, associated with the Republican Party and ordered along the lines of a paramilitary organization. The day before the 1860 election, the YMRU, based in New York, released this report as "a statement of the work it has done."

Broken up into six articles, the four page report, measuring 8.5" x 11", includes such topics as lectures, including those given by abolitionist Cassius M. Clay, Congressman John Sherman, brother of future Union general William T. Sherman, Congressman Francis P. Blair, and Congressman Charles Sumner; the nominating committee; the Wide Awakes: "The first company of Wide Awakes organized in this city or State was formed by this 'Union' . . . The work of the Wide Awake organization, since its establishment by us, is known to the whole country; we need not dwell upon it"; the circulation of campaign documents such as speeches by Charles Sumner and Abraham Lincoln, the Republican platform, the life of Lincoln, et al. Several speeches were available in English and in German; meetings; and finances, of which $5,101 was used in Lincoln's campaign for president. Folds. 2.75" cut through page 3 and 4. Spots of foxing and small binding holes in the vertical fold.

With a 7.75" x 5.5" YMRU letterhead sheet bearing an extract of a letter, dated November 15, 1860, on the verso regarding the death of Lt. James H. Moore of the U.S. Steamer Lancaster. The sheet shows some toning in the margins.
