[Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation]. Union Soldier George W. Iden Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 7.5" x 9.75", Brooke's Station [Virginia], February 8, 1863. After complaining about their quarters, he adds that "this is the way it goes in the 'Winter Campaign' the Dupes at Washington were calling so loud for. The whole Potomac Army is absolutely stuck in the mud." He comments that the war no longer seems to be about the "preservation of our bleeding Country . . . 'Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation' made it appear as though the war was for the purpose of emancipating the slaves. This late Bill that passed the House authorizing the President to enlist colored men as soldiers is making great dissatisfaction amongst the soldiers. . . . I know how new life and vigor could be put into the 'Demoralized Potomac Army. Reinstate Gen. McLellan [sic] and have the president revoke his Emancipation Proclamation. Oh, pshaw! . . . Lincoln is to easy led astray by the dupes around him. This is becoming more manifest every day." Folds. Damage to the upper right corner. Moderately stained.

George W. Iden enlisted as a corporal in Co. "A," 25th Ohio Infantry, on June 18, 1861. First wounded at McDowell, Virginia, in May 1862 and again at Deveaux's Neck, South Carolina, in December 1864. He mustered out of the army as a first lieutenant on June 18, 1866.
