[7th South Carolina Infantry]. Confederate Soldier John T. Baskin Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8", Centerville [Virginia], June 21, 1861. John T. Baskin, a private in Co. "D," 7th South Carolina Infantry, had yet to experience the horrors of war when he wrote this letter home to his father describing the superiority of Southern soldiers over those of "Old Abe," in part:

"I would like to go to Alexandria to see what old Abe is doing. I know he is scared nearly to death when 1000 men can whip 4000. . . . Some of Old [Col. Maxcy] Gregg's men took two of Abe's men night before last. One man took two men. That shows Old Abe's men won't fight for when this man went up to them he drew down his gun and they came up to him and laid down their guns at his feet. . . . One man took two at Manassas about the same time. I think if the South Carolina boys stay here long we will have all of Abe's men taken prisoner. . . . there was one of the best fights that has ever been fought in the world over the mountains. Two men drove back seven hundred men. Just the two. . . . Neither one of the two was hurt. Was that not remarkable? "

Waterstaining is seen along the vertical fold, affecting all pages. Intersections of the folds show some separation. Separation is also evident at the right edge of the upper horizontal fold on page three.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
