[7th Regiment Iowa Volunteers]. Union General Edward Ord Signed Letter and Letters Associated With the Sanitary Conditions and Equipment of the 7th Iowa Volunteers, July-August, 1862. A superb archive of letters and reports concerning sanitary conditions and matters of military equipage for the 7th Iowa Volunteers. At the time these documents were written the regiment was participating in the siege of Corinth, Mississippi. The documents are briefly described as follows:

Autograph Letter Signed by Union Major General Edward Ortho Cresap Ord.
Two integral pages, 8" x 10", Corinth, Mississippi, July 18, 1862, to the editor of the Davenport Gazette. Ord writes of the sanitary conditions of the 7th Iowa, in part: "The sanitary conditions of any regiment is a very good index of the character of its officers and men - for when the officers are carful and sensible, the mean are healthy and comfortable - especial credit is therefore due to the officers of the 7th Iowa - one of the best cared for Regiments in the army...I hope you will give this statement the benefit of circulation in your valuable journal." Some minor toning to the paper and some splits in the fold creases, else very good.

Letter Signed by Colonel Elliott W. Rice as Commander of the 7th Iowa "
Elliott Rice / Colonel". One page, 8" x 10", "Near Corinth, Mississippi", July 10, 1862, to Major General Edward Ord. Colonel Rice apprises Ord of the sanitary condition of his men, writing in part: "My camps have always been thoroughly policed and everything pernicious to health removed there from...". The paper is slightly toned and the letter bears the usual fold creases, otherwise it is in fine condition.

Autograph Letter From Captain S. S. Seward Requesting Military Equipment on Behalf of Major General Edward Ord.
One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Corinth, Mississippi, August 5, 1862, to an un-named General. Captain Seward requests "articles of clothing camp & Garrison Equipage, except blouses, hats, shirts, pants & shoes & stockings which may be needed in your Division." Toning to paper with the usual fold creases.

Undated Letter to Major General Edward Ord Requesting Help With Setting Up Hospital Tents and Beds.
One page, 7.75" x 10", signed by Norman Gay, Surgeon, U.S. Volunteers. Surgeon Norman Gay informs Ord that he has 400 sick men without tents or beds and requests additional resources to help set up proper conditions. The paper is toned and has a 1" hole which affects two words of text, else good condition.
