[1864 Presidential Election] Letter to Congressman John A. Griswold. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", on blue-lined "Office, No. 362 Broadway" letterhead, New York, September 19, 1864. The paper features a charming vignette of the Battle of Hampton Roads, the first instance of combat between two ironclads, the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia, located in the top left corner.

Written by W. L. Barnes and addressed to John A. Griswold, a Republican member of Congress and president of the Rensselaer Iron Works, which forged parts for the USS Monitor, Barnes is congratulating Griswold on his "renomination" to Congress.

He goes on to discuss the upcoming presidential election saying: "I cannot myself support McClellan on the Chicago platform not alone either because of the equivocal nature of the platform but because McClellan if elected too much Controlled by the unscrupulous portions of the party..."

General George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was at one time general-in-chief of the army during the Civil War and was twice commander of the Army of the Potomac. After being relieved of duty for a second time, he announced his intention to run for president and secured the nomination as the Democratic Party's candidate to run against President Abraham Lincoln.
