Description

USS Valley Forge 48-Star US Size 7 Ensign.
This flag was flown by the USS Valley Forge (CV-45), a late-war Essex-class carrier launched in 1945. The Valley Forge, although constructed and launched during WWII, never saw combat.

The ensign of the USS Valley Forge is a 48-star US Ensign #7 (61.6" X 117.2") wool bunting with sewn stripes & stars, finished with a roped canvas header and a ring, lead-line and brass snap. The ensign is marked in black on the obverse hoist, "U.S.S. Valley Forge Flag U.S. Ensign No.7 - P".

Valley Forge (CV-45) was built with money raised by the citizens of Philadelphia in a special war bond drive. Her keel was laid in 1943 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and she was named after Valley Forge, the site of the 1777-1778 winter encampment of General George Washington's Continental Army. The name has become synonymous with endurance and perseverance in the face of hardship. Christened too late to participate in WWII, Valley Forge was active in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Awards: US Navy Unit Commendation; Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation; China Service Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal ("Europe" clasp); National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.

Condition: Fair to Good - The flag is used, worn and soiled with a severely frayed fly end. There is a shipboard repair in the upper fly corner

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
