US Navy Officer's Sword Named To John P. Cromwell Submarine Commander Awarded The Congressional Medal Of Honor US Navy Officer's sword, 30 3/4" bright blade with sharp standard etching panel etched "John P. Cromwell", ricasso etched "Wm. H. Horstmann Company Philadelphia". Hilt excellent, perfect shark skin grip and triple wire wrap, knucklebow wrapped with original gold sword knot. Leather scabbard with standard brass mounts in excellent condition.
Captain John P. Cromwell was the most senior submariner to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II and one of three submariners who received it posthumously.
While attacking a Japanese convoy on November 19 1943, the USS Skulpin was forced to the surface, fatally damaged in a gun battle and abandoned by her surviving crew members. Captain Cromwell, who knew secret details of the impending operation to capture the Gilbert Islands, delibertately remained on board as she sank. For his sacrificial heroism in preventing the enemy from receiving this information he posthumously received the Medal of Honor.
Accompanying the sword are the following; 3 1/2" high ashtray engraved U.S.S. Sculpin, 7" X 9 1/2"; original photograph of the USS Sculpin; Launching ribbon and button; 11 1/2" wood casting pattern for a reducing flange produced for the Sculpin; Postal cover dated Oct 27 1939 commemorating the shakedown cruise of the Sculpin and 6 covers pertaining to the USS Cromwell.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
