U.S. Army Air Force Wheeler Field Flag 1941-1945.
Wheeler Field was the main U.S. Army Air Corps facility in Hawaii in the 1920's and early 1930's. It was established in 1922 by troops from Hawaii's famed Schofield Barracks, on the former training field of the 17th Cavalry and was the site of several aviation milestones. The first non-stop flight from California to Hawaii landed at Wheeler in 1927 and, in 1935, Amelia Earhart took off from Wheeler on the first solo flight between Hawaii and California. It played a major role in the evolution of the Hawaiian Air Force which was the nucleus of the 7th Air Force.

It was supplanted by Hickam Field as the Army's principle airbase in 1935; however, it remained the headquarters of the US Army Air Forces' pursuit fighter wing and, as such, was a prime target for the Japanese in order to prevent the fighter planes stationed there from getting airborne.

The first wave of the Japanese attack on Wheeler was by 25 dive bombers who bombed the hangers before returning to strafe the flight line's parked fighters. The attack killed 38, wounded 59 and destroyed 83 aircraft. The second wave caused little additional damage. Wheeler quickly recovered and became an important base in the war effort, eventually hosting the Seventh Air Service Command to provide service and support for the B-29 bombers in the Marianas which began massive raids against Japan. It is currently a US Army Air Field.

This flag is a 53" x 89" Dettra Bulldog brand, cotton bunting, sewn stripe 48-star, double appliqué flag, finished with a header and grommets. The flag is marked on the obverse hoist "Wheeler AAF" and bears a maker's mark in the upper hoist corner. This is a great flag for a collector of WWII aviation artifacts

The flag is in Good to Fair Condition - used, worn and soiled. The flag is frayed in the fly corners and the stripes are beginning to split. There are numerous small holes.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
