    President Roosevelt - Casablanca, 1943

Two U.S. Special Security Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 48-Star National Flags. The 30th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army was originally constituted in 1901. Just before WWII, it was assigned to the 3rd infantry Division and remained a component of that division for the entire war. The Security Battalion was formed to provide security for President Roosevelt during the ten days (January 14-24, 1943) of the Casablanca Conference.

The first flag is a 48-star 36" X 60" rayon, embroidered starfield, sewn stripe, color, finished with three red ribbon pole ties, and fringed on three sides with 2" golden-yellow rayon fringe. The flag has a maker's label on the upper reverse hoist for a "FEDERAL" brand flag from Annin & Company, the nation's oldest flag maker. It is marked on the reverse hoist of the 4th, 5th & 6th white stripes, "30 IN. SEC. BAT. FOR PRES. ROSSEVELT" and "GARD - SEC. BN" and "ANFA HOTEL."

The second flag, identified as "a replacement flag," is a similar, 48-star, dyed starfield, sewn stripe flag, fringed on three sides with 2" golden-yellow rayon fringe and finished with three red ribbon pole ties along the hoist. The flag bears a maker's label on the upper obverse hoist for an Annin & Co, "ARTGLO" brand printed taffeta flag. On the reverse hoist the flag is marked on the 4th, 5th & 6th white stripes, "30th SECURITY BAT. FOR PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT" and "GUARD SEC. BAT. ANFA HAOTEL" and "CASABLANCA 1943."

How these flags were used is unknown. The flags civilian sizes are not made to military specifications. It is likely that these flags accompanied the presidential party and were provided to the 30th Special Battalion for the occasion. It is likely that they were used as décor by the battalion, rather than for military ceremonies.

The 30th Infantry Regiment was among the first to see combat in WWII. They landed with the 3rd Infantry division for the liberation of French North Africa, and helped liberate the city of Casablanca. The 30th stayed near North Africa until 1943, during which, they prepared for Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily.

On January 18, 1943, FDR left the grounds of his villa at the Anfa Hotel for the first time during the Casablanca Conference. He embarked in a jeep to inspect a 3rd Division Honor Guard from a special battalion of 30th Infantry Regiment, who had been assigned to provide security for FDR's compound.

These are flags that would enhance a WWII, North Africa, Casablanca, 30th Infantry Regiment, FDR or diplomatic history collection.

The 30th Infantry WWII citations include the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with arrowhead for Algeria-French Morocco; four Presidential Unit Citations, French Croix de guerre with Palm, and the World War II, Fourragère.

Condition: The FEDERAL flag is in good to fair condition. It is used, worn, torn and soiled with losses to the fly end of the white stripes. The ARTGLO flag is in poor condition. It is used, worn, torn with severe losses throughout.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
