The Surrender Flag of the Japanese Imperial Submarine I-400, Signed August 28, 1945.
The significance of the I-400 is detailed in the description of the previous lot. The sub was captured by the Submarine Tender U.S.S. Proteus (AS-19) on August 27, 1945. This surrender flag was signed at that time by a number of crewmen of the Proteus, listed in the Extended Description on-line. They elected to dedicate the flag to the revered U.S.S. Archerfish, one of the subs they tendered.

Captured enemy flags are among the most prized of military collectibles. Considering the unique history of the I-400, the present example is particularly compelling.
