The Original Instrument of Surrender for the Japanese Forces in New Guinea and Adjacent Islands on September 6, 1945.
In one of the most historic original documents from World War II, the ranking Japanese general & admiral in the region surrendered all forces under their command to the commanding general of the Australian army. The surrender took place upon HMS Glory, which was anchored just out of range of Japanese guns off the island of New Britain [Ramboul]. According to the Glory's commanding officer. Captain A. W. Buzzard, the attending Japanese were "certainly a motley crew. They had been isolated on New Britain for some time and their clothes were in terrible shape." According to Buzzard, a dispute ensued between the Japanese naval & army commanders as to who should sign the document and, in the end, both affixed their signatures.

A period newspaper article pictures Buzzard with the document which he had framed and retained as a souvenir. It was subsequently unframed and ended up in the scrapbook of a Canadian telegrapher aboard the Glory. It is still glued down to the album page and shows minor edge roughness and scattered marks from glue bleed-through,and would clearly profit from a treatment by a professional paper conservator. 8.25" x 12". Also included are two interesting period newspaper articles.
