The First Ensign of the USS Independence (CV-62), January 10, 1959. The USS Independence (CV/CVA-62) was the last of the Forrestal class of supercarriers. She was the sixth US Naval vessel to be named "Independence" a ship's name that can be traced back to 1776 in American service. This was the first flag hoisted aboard the USS Independence at her commissioning, January 10, 1959.

The first ensign of the USS Independence is a size 9, (approximately) 38" X 75", 48-star, nylon bunting, double applique, sewn stripe flag finished with a roped header with a snap lead line and ring. The ensign is marked on the lower reverse hoist, "USS INDEPENDENCE."

The Forrestal-class super carriers were designed in the early 1950s to carry a wide array of aircraft types; fighter, attack craft, bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft - all to be jets. Independence had her shakedown cruise in the Atlantic before arriving at her homeport at Norfolk, Virginia. On June 30, 1959 she began a ten-week training cruise in the Caribbean Sea during which, on July 4, 1959, the United States flag changed from 48 to 49 stars to recognize the statehood of Alaska, rendering this flag obsolete.

The Independence would go on to having a long career of service with the Mediterranean Fleet, participating in the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm. She was decommissioned in 1998.

This ensign is accompanied with provenance that establishes this as the first flag flown on the ship. It is an appropriate flag for an Independence, Navy aircraft carrier, or Cold War collector.

For her service in the 1950s the USS Independence was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Condition: The ensign of the Independence. It is used, worn, soiled and faded at the fly end, but it is otherwise complete with no losses.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
