Paul Tibbets: Enola Gay Manhattan Project Archive.
Extensive and historically important archive assembled by Sgt. Lawrence J. Miller, 393rd Bombardment Squadron United States Army. Miller was part of the support team that made possible the successful deployment of the first atomic bomb. He was there at the Alamagordo test site in New Mexico, then at Tinian Island, the point of departure for the Enola Gay. The archive includes a wide range of snapshots in different sizes, negatives and military arm patches. Many of the snapshots are identified on verso as to location and date. The locations include an Air Force base in North Carolina, Westover Field in Massachusetts, Alamagordo, Tinian Island, homeward-bound troop ship and port of San Francisco. These are also negatives corresponding to these shots (some defective, some duplicates). The highlight of the collection is a pair of period snapshots of the Enola Gay, each signed by the pilot, Paul Tibbets. Tibbets has signed many Enola Gay photos, but NONE of them are period photos. Per inscriptions on the back, these were taken on August 6, 1945, after the bombing of Hiroshima. There are five arm patches, including one with the mushroom cloud symbol ("58th Wing 509"). There is also a photo of Sgt. Miller in uniform, his personal pocket-knife (poor condition) and a notebook he kept during the 1950s with airplane maintenance guidelines and specifications. The photographs document the progress of this top secret project, including test flights, crashes, aerial reconnaissance and support logistics. We count sixty-eight photographs (some duplicates). There are sixty-four negatives (twenty of them in a glassine envelope marked Alamagordo).
