Normandy, Omaha Beach Bombardment Destroyer - HMS Talybont (L18). HMS Talybont (L18) was a Type III Hunt-class escort destroyer of the Royal Navy commissioned in May of 1943. Named after British Hunt clubs, the 86 Hunt class destroyers were designed to fill the Royal Navy's need for a large number of small destroyer-type vessels capable of both convoy escort duty and operations with the fleet. The Talybont club was located in Wales.

This flag is a jack. All commissioned warships in the WWII navies of the British Empire wore the White Ensign; the individual ships wore the Union Flag as a jack. A jack is a flag of national character, flown at the bow when at anchor or moored, or dressing ship and elsewhere under special circumstances.

This jack is a 33" X 63" completely machine sewn, wool flag, finished with a roped canvas header and lead line. The flag id marked on the lower obverse hoist, "HMS TALYBONT."

Talybont spent 1943 on patrol duties operating out of Plymouth. Her first action was battling a flotilla of German torpedo boats. She engaged with the same flotilla in early 1944 and sank the T-29. She was a part of Operation Neptune, the maritime component of Operation Overlord, the allied liberation of Europe. Talybont was assigned to Task Force "C" the bombardment group. On the morning of D-Day Talybont provided accurate gunfire support for the assault by US Rangers at Pointe du Hoc. She maneuvered so close to the beach that she could bring her secondary armaments to bear. One of her pom-pom guns is credited with knocking out a German machine gun. She supported the Rangers until they scaled the cliffs and then reverted to escort duty.

She participated in the operation against Cherbourg where she was slightly damaged. After repairs she resumed patrol duties in the English Channel, again against German torpedo boats, until she was transferred to fleet operations in the North Sea. She was going to be sent to the Pacific, but VJ day ended that plan and she was assigned to duty in the eastern Mediterranean.

If you are a D-Day collector, acquiring an artifact associated with supporting the US Rangers at Pointe du Hoc should be a top priority.

Condition: The Talybont jack is in good condition. It is used, worn and soiled, but otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
