Description
Normandy Assault Craft - Omaha Beach - D-Day USS LCI-93 (L). USS LCI(L)-93 was commissioned in early 1943. She was a Landing Craft Infantry-Large, one of over 900 purpose-built "Elsie Items," that could land up to 200 fully equipped troops, traveling from either rear bases or attack transports, directly to a beachhead, the LCI was a dedicated beachable infantry landing craft, smaller than the Landing Ship Infantry (LSI) but larger than a Higgins boat. She started her service in North Africa, and landed at Sicily and Salerno.The ensign of the LCI-93 is a cotton, 30" X 52", 48-star, dye printed starfield, sewn stripe, flag finished with a heading and grommets and two grommets. The flag is inscribed on the reverse hoist, "D-DAY 6 JUNE 44 LCI (L) 93."
At D-Day, the LCI-93 was under U.S. Coast Guard Command assigned to Flotilla Four. She made two landings on Omaha Beach, Easy Red Sector, on the morning of June 6th. Her first landing was for soldiers from Cos. I and M of the 18th Infantry regiment, 1st Infantry Division. She then backed off the beach and headed for the USS Samuel B. Chase, where she took on a double load, standing room only, of troops from the 453rd Amphibious Truck Company, 5th Special Engineer Brigade. However, as she approached Omaha there was terrible congestion near the beach and she was delayed landing her troops.
Next to LCI-93 was the disabled LCI-487. A party of sailors fled the LCI-487 to the safety of the LCI-93. German spotters noticed them as the sailors moved between the vessels and shifted their fire to the LCI-93. In short order, she was hit in quick succession by ten rounds becoming permanently disabled and lost.
This is an ensign from a documented Omaha Beach LCI for an advanced collector of Omaha Beach, D-Day, Normandy, or USCG artifacts.
For her WWII service the USS LCI-93 (L) was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Coast Guard Unit Commendation, American Campaign Medal, Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with four campaign stars, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Condition: The ensign of the LCI-93 is in good condition. It is used, worn, and soiled, but is otherwise complete.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
