    Description

Named for a Hero of the Coral Sea - Accepted Japanese Surrender of Ponape USS Hyman (DD-732). USS Hyman (DD-732), was an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer commissioned in June of 1944. She was the only warship of the US Navy ever named for Lt. Commander Willford Milton Hyman (USNA '24), who commanded the destroyer USS Sims during the Battle of the Coral Sea, May 7, 1942. The Sims, while escorting the USS Neosho, was attacked by Japanese aircraft, struck by two 500 lb. bombs, mortally damaged, and fought to the last. Her skipper went down with the Sims and was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

The ensign of the Hyman is cotton bunting, 60" X 114", 48-star, double applique, sewn stripe finished with a header and grommets. The flag is inscribed on the obverse hoist, "JAP SURRENDER [illegible]" and "USS HYMAN 732" with a Valley Forge makers stamp and a USN size notation "8." On the reverse are three indistinct names.

The Hyman began her service in the Atlantic before transiting to the Pacific, arriving in October of 1944. She was assigned amphibious training, escort, and patrol duties. As the US Navy closed in on Japan, the Hyman was tasked with screening transports and shore bombardments for the Iwo Jima landings before she was assigned to the invasion of Okinawa, where she again provided transport screening, anti-submarine patrol, and shore bombardment. The ships off Okinawa were under constant aerial attack. In April of 1945, she was damaged by bombs with many casualties.

Hyman returned to the States for repairs and returned to Pearl Harbor the day of the Japanese surrender 15 August 15th. She accepted the surrender of several outlying Japanese islands - Kusaie and Ponape before assuming Japanese occupation duties. She returned to the States in 1946, served with the Mediterranean Fleet, and again in the Pacific during the Korean War.

This is an opportunity for a collector of USN Destroyer, WWII in the Pacific, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa artifacts.

During WWII, the USS Hyman was awarded: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 2 campaign stars, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Medal with the Asia clasp.

Condition: The ensign of the Hyman is in good condition. It is used and worn but otherwise complete.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
