From the Collection of General Mark Clark: His Personal Four Star General License Plates. Pair of 10" x 6.75" steel plates, painted emerald green, each with four chrome stars attached with different configurations. One plate marked "1986.11.3" in the top right corner. Some chipping, possibly repainted, but very fine overall.

All items from the General Mark Clark Collection were originally part of the Museum Collection at The Citadel and were transferred and then sold by the South Carolina State Museum to a private collector in 1992. General Clark served as the commanding officer at the Citadel during the latter part of his career, and it was then that these personal WWII artifacts were given to the school. In 1993 the items were purchased by the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware and subsequently deaccessioned by them.

Mark Clark was the youngest lieutenant general in World War II, and commanded all U.S. forces in Italy. During the Korean War he succeeded Matthew Ridgway as head of the United Nations Command. From 1954 to 1955 he led the "Clark Task Force" (whose members included Ernest Hollings, Eddie Rickenbacker, and U.S. Navy Admiral Richard Connolly). The group was tasked with analyzing all aspects of U.S. intelligence gathering, and submitted a top secret report to the President as well as an unclassified version for Congress. The group coined the term "intelligence community" to describe "the machinery for accomplishing our intelligence objectives."

These license plates were donated to The Citadel where Clark served as Commanding Officer from 1954 to 1965. A copy of the letter of authentication from the Civil War Museum and Library is included with this lot.
