Fantastic Large and Diverse Archive of Items Related to the RMS Laconia, Sunk off the Coast of West Africa by the German Submarine U-156 on September 12, 1942. The RMS Laconia, a Cunard Line passenger ship converted for use as a troopship, was carrying 80 civilians, 268 British army soldiers, 160 Polish soldiers and 1800 Italian prisoners of war when it was struck by a single torpedo fired by the German U-boat U-156. When the German U-boat commander realized that fellow Axis prisoners were onboard the sinking liner, he and other U-boats attempted rescue operations under a Red Cross flag. An American B-24 Liberator bomber attacked the submarines forcing them to break off rescue operations. This action, later referred to as the Laconia incident, ushered in Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare policy of not rescuing survivors of torpedoed ships. The material in this archive is primarily from the RMS Laconia's days as an ocean liner with the Cunard Line. The lot includes: 1) Twelve silver-plate RMS Laconia souvenir spoons, tea strainers, and a single butter knife. Each has an enameled Cunard Line logo and "R.M.S. Laconia" on the handle's end. 2) two silver-plate salt and pepper sets with the enameled Laconia logo. 3) Cased set of six silver-plate demitasse spoons. 4) Tortoise-shell cigarette box. 5) Four silver-plate cigarette boxes. 6) Nine silver-plate ash trays of varying styles. 7) Seven silver-plate bud vases. 8) One brass and one silver-plate souvenir bell. 9) Twelve silver-plate jiggers and assorted small containers. 10) Eight silver-plate compacts, pillboxes, etc. 11) Silver-plate playing card box. 12) Six silver-plate napkin rings. 13) Two silver-plate tea strainers. 14) Two silver-plate short candle sticks. 15) Silver-plate sugar bowl and candy dish. 16) Silver-plate musical desk clock (clock mechanism not working but music box mechanism does). 17) Assorted Laconia souvenir jewelry and pocket knives. 18) Two Laconia china dessert plates and milk glass candy dish. 19) Laconia cup and saucer (Shokki Co., Yokohama, Japan). 20) Grey metal ship's lantern with Laconia stencil ID on the side. 21) Four souvenir cloth dolls. 22) Log Book Cruise Round South America 1927. 133 page hardbound book, partially printed, the remainder a diary written by hand of a passenger's experience on the Laconia cruise, including friends made, etc. 23) Front page of the San Francisco Chronicle, dated February 28, 1917 with a headline announcing the sinking of the first Laconia in WWI, also sunk by a German U-boat. 24) Woman's brown leather souvenir purse from a 1913 cruise of the first Laconia. Contains a real photo postcard of a stewardess on board the ship. 25) Large lot of assorted ephemera including luggage tags, handkerchief, menus, programs, postcards, letters, etc. All items in excellent condition.Auction Info
