    D-Day Ship USS Buncombe County(LST-510) 48-Star Flag.
Approximately 48 x 72-inches. Marked "LST 510" on the obverse hoist; size (4x6) stamped in blue along with a rather indistinct maker's mark. Fully commissioned in January, 1944, the Buncombe County endured a harrowing Atlantic crossing reaching Derry, Northern Ireland on April 13, 1944. She departed the harbor on June 1, 1944 loaded with 200 men and 70 vehicles of the 29th Infantry Division and on June 4 headed for the coast of France. Foul weather interfered with her plans and she wasn't able to unload her valuable contents on Omaha beach until eight hours after the initial assault. For the next three months she made over thirty cross-channel trips ferrying men and supplies to France and casualties back to England. She was diverted for training in the Pacific Theater but Japan's surrender changed that plan. She was struck from the Navy's registry in 1958 and sold to civilian service. Operated as a ferry under the name MV Cape Henlopen, she remains one of the few WWII ships still in active service. She received one battle star for her WWII service.

Condition: Machine sewn stars and stripes. Brass grommets. Very good condition.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
