    D-Day Ship USS Barton (DD-722) 48-Star Flag.
    Approximately 36 x 60-inches. Marked "Ponte du Hoc - 16 Kami Down" and "USS BARTON (DD722)" on the hoist. Stamped size "7" with the size stamped in red. The Barton was an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer commissioned in December, 1943. She carried out screening, patrol and bombardment duties during the invasion of Normandy where she rescued 31 American soldiers from the sinking LCT-2498. The Barton provided gunfire support for the 2nd Ranger Battalion at Pointe du Hoc. On June 25, 1944 she bombarded German batteries in Cherbourg harbor. She was transferred to the Pacific Theater in July of 1944 where she participated in the capture of Leyte, the Iwo Jima invasion and invasion of Okinawa among others. She was responsible for downing several Japanese kamikaze aircraft. She was awarded six battle stars for WWII service and two for her service in the Korean War.

    Condition: Machine sewn stars and stripes. Zinc grommets. Some yellowing and light damp stains, some added seams to strengthen fly end.

    This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
