D-Day Invasion: Liberty Ship USS Charles Morgan Flag.
65" x 34" wool bunting flag, marked "ESN No. 10" on the canvas hoist, four brass grommets. Fraying, splits and loss, as shown. Moderately soiled. The flag was acquired at an estate sale for William McDougal Stott (1922-2020) of Humboldt, Tennessee. It was advertised as belong a flag from the Charles Morgan. Local obituaries and online research indicate Stott was aboard a landing craft on D-Day, June 6, 1944. [Ensign Scott] "...was the Skipper of a LCT delivering troops to the Normandy Beach during the first wave of attack on D-Day." He apparently received this flag from a fellow shipmate, as a souvenir. The Charles Morgan was launched on November 30, 1943. The ship was damaged by a German bomber near Utah Beach on June 10, 1944. Eight men were killed. Considered a "constructive total loss", the ship was scuttled in place. The lot includes a color snapshot of the flag, identifying it as from the Charles Morgan, that came from the estate sale.
