A Very Special Painting by Dwight D. Eisenhower with D-Day Association.Among his many accomplishments, Ike was a skilled artist whose paintings are avidly collected. This one was painted as a gift to his trusted valet, Master Sergeant Mooney, to whom Eisenhower also gifted a variety of personal mementoes. The oil painting is inscribed in pencil by Ike on the verso: "Telegraph Cottage - small home south of London where I lived while planning both Torch (1942) and Overlord (1944). Painted for Master Sgt. Mooney in 1949 from a water color. Dwight D. Eisenhower Jan. 1, 1950." Mooney went on to serve as Eisenhower's valet during his presidential years. Please see our website presentation of this lot for images of the sergeant proudly displaying his painting on the wall of his White House quarters. The painting is signed "DE" in the lower left corner.
For the World War II scholar, what could be more evocative than this work, showing where Eisenhower worked day and night to plan operations which would determine the course of the war? Surely it is the most historically important painting by this military commander & future president! It is in beautiful condition, measuring 24" x 19.5" as elegantly custom-framed.
