761st Tank Battalion, African-American "Black Panthers" 48-Star Flag.
Approximately 36 x 60-inches. The silk flag is date-stamped "APR 1942" (the date the unit was formed) in the exposed inner sleeve and also marked in ink just under the canton on the obverse side "761st TANK BATTALION / BLACK PANTHERS". There is also the name "Bates" written on the flag which may provide a start for researching the flag. There is a Lt. Paul L. Bates listed in the unit's roster. The 761st Tank Battalion was a separate tank battalion primarily composed of African-American soldiers. They were known as the "Black Panthers" after their unit's distinctive insignia. The unit's motto was "Come Out Fighting" and briefly baseball legend Jackie Robinson was numbered among them. The unit distinguished itself and was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and a number of medals, including one Medal of Honor. The unit first saw combat on November 7, 1944 in France and served 183 days of continuous service, fighting all the way to Germany.

Condition: Machine-sewn stars and stripes. Colors faded, with a repaired hole.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
