WWII Republic of China National Flag.
This WWII-era "Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth Republic of China" national flag bears in the canton the 12-rayed sun of the Kuomintang (KMT) Party. The party was founded on the republican and nationalist principles espoused by the father of the Chinese republic, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. The KMT eventually came to control most of China, only to be defeated in the Civil War by the Chinese Communists in 1949.

This flag is a 44" X 70" sewn silk flag finished with a wide white sleeve and ties common to Chinese flags of the WWII era. The flag is marked with Chinese characters on the lower obverse hoist.

Flags like this were used throughout China, by nationalists, the government, warlords, the military, political groups, students and missionaries. The stamps or "chops" on the lower hoist remain untranslated, but the paperwork accompanying the flag indicates that it was provided by the National Military Council and signed by Major General Kung Yu of the Board of Military Operations. It is typical of Chinese flags of the WWII era.

The flag is in Good condition being used, worn and soiled with a frayed fly end. The stamps on the hoist are mirrored on the red field indicating that immediately after being stamped the flag was folded, marking the field with a reverse of the stamp.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information, along with a 1946 letter of transmittal from the National Military Council in Chungking, China declaring this to be a Nationalist Chinese flag flown during WWII by the Chinese army.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
