    Description

WWI Roold Style Flying Helmet, Possibly German. The Germans adopted crash helmets in the Roold style though with some modification, typically with the addition of a bumper running over the crown which this example lacks. This example has a black leather covered cork body, padded outer bumper, short leather bill and large ear flaps which buckle under the chin. The inside dome of the helmet is covered with cotton twill and there is a black leather nine-finger adjustable liner. The interior of the helmet is marked with several ink stamps, though none are legible. The wool lining of the ear flaps has been eaten away, as has one small section of the leather liner, otherwise the helmet is complete and in very good condition. From the collection of Dr. Douglas Harman.
