    Description

WWI Lafayette Escadrille Fuselage Fabric Displaying the Squadron's Famous Indian-Head Insignia.
Framed to an overall size of 31 x 22 ½-inches overall. The fawn colored fabric bears the squadron's famous Sioux Indian insignia. The section of fabric would appear to have come from the left side of the fuselage of a presumably a SPAD aeroplane. The Indian-head insignia was carried forward to become the insignia of the U.S. Army Air Service's 103rd Aero Squadron when the Lafayette Escadrille was disbanded on February 8, 1918. The exploits of the Lafayette Escadrille and succeeding 103rd Aero Squadron need not be recanted here, suffice to say that many renowned pilots served in both squadrons including Raoul Lufberry, James McConnell, Charles Biddle and many other who were household names at the time.

Condition: Very good. Exhibits honest wear from use and storage, including some moderate loss to the painted insignia. There are a few areas of touch up, namely on the face and crown of the feather headdress. The original stitching in the fabric appears immediately above and below the insignia. The fabric seems to be permanently mounted to the backing board. Not examined out of frame.
