WWI Imperial German Aeroplane Rudder Fabric, Accompanied by a Professional Reconstruction of the Rudder Using the Original Framework. The consignor originally acquired this complete rudder in rather poor condition so both sides of the original fabric were carefully removed and preserved and the original framework sent to Vought Aircraft Division where it was professionally restored with new fabric. The original doped fabric measures 26 ½" wide and 35 ½" tall. The rudder is emblazoned with an early-style black cross and the aircraft number "9634". Numbers on rudders are atypical of the German practice in WWI as rudders were often replaced as a result of damage. The rudder profile is similar to many German types of the period but the exact model of aircraft is unknown to this cataloger. The original fabric is rather weathered and has several short splits and small holes. The restored rudder is identically marked as the original and housed in a thin wooden storage case, hinged to allow viewing both sides. The original wooden framework was used in the restoration of the rudder. Included are two metal control struts (the outline of their oval bases can be seen on the original fabric). This group makes a fantastic display and would certainly be the center of attention in any collector's "war room". From the collection of Dr. Douglas Harman.
