    Description

World War I Service Record Certificate and John J. Pershing Portrait. This lot contains two pieces from the first World War; a framed certificate of acknowledgement of service and a portrait of General "Black Jack" Pershing. Pershing would obtain the highest rank ever in the Armed Services, equal only to that of the posthumous George Washington. His efforts in the Great War would hasten the allies victory in the war. Having acquired his new rank of General of the Armies of the United States, he was authorized to create his insignia for the rank but he declined. He wore the four stars of a regular general for the rest of his life. This portrait was painted by G. Renesch and printed in lithograph onto this hard card stock backing. The overall color of the portrait has turned yellow from acid degradation; the lower right corner is torn and missing; small imperfections and chipping throughout. Portrait measures 16" x 20".

The service record is a more personal item and was issued to the serviceman pictured in the center of the document; Marion Rankin. The certificate states that he served from October 23, 1917 to May 20, 1919. Many major military figures are pictured, including Pershing, Joffre, King Albert, and Wood. Surrounding these images and the inscription are battalions of troops from all nations, and several battle scenes on land and sea. A handsome display! In excellent condition aside from some slight staining in the lower corners; foxing present in the lower left. Framed to an overall size of 18" x 22".
