    Description

World War I Propaganda (U.S. Navy, 1917): Howard Chandler Christy Poster. Titled "I Want You for the Navy", it measures 24.5" x 39.5" (poster itself) and has been professionally mounted on linen. Over a century has passed since its printing, but this poster still evokes the sentiments of a time that is growing increasingly distant in the American imagination. It captures the prevailing sense of innocence, patriotism, and national pride of the early 20th century as WWI took its toll. This lovely poster was the work of Howard Chandler Christy, an internationally recognized war illustrator and creator of the famous "Christy Girls." There is some touch-up to the blue jacket and the legend at the bottom, as well as a small area of wrinkling in the upper left corner and scattered fissures concentrated in the border area. These are all of a minor nature and do not take away from the very fine overall appearance. Printed by Forbes Company.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
