    Description

USS Nebraska / Vera Cruz 1914 Tablecloth, 21.5" (with lace trim), printed on silk. Above, an American eagle with wings outstretched over a wreath surrounding "U.S.N.", flanked by United States flags. Pictured in the center is the battleship USS Nebraska under steam, a Mexican Señorita, the Mexican flag, and a hacienda upon a hill. Below is a trophy of arms with U.S. flags and "Greetings from Vera Cruz". A floral border surrounds all.
On April 21, 1914 United States naval and marine forces landed at the Mexican port of Vera Cruz in response to a diplomatic crisis at Tampico. U.S. Army troops relieved the navy and marines and continued to occupy the city for another six months. Among the ships anchored in the harbor of Vera Cruz was the USS Nebraska.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
