Uncle Sam Needs That Extra Shovelful (Lot of 3) Artist: F. Sindelar. Printed for the U.S. Fuel Administration. Compared to other Fuel Administration posters this one is very dramatic and special. It depicts a workman shoveling coal, and Uncle Sam touching him gently on the shoulder. Beneath the image is a list of directions on how to best use coal and help with the war effort. The steps listed seem somewhat archaic today, but the message is very direct and specific for how coal was used in the 1910s. This poster is desirable not only for its fantastic artistry but also as a piece of history in how energy was conserved and consumed!

Condition-Poster 1-Fine; one major tear on upper edge.

Poster 2-Good; severe tears on top and bottom edge, acid damage has made the paper very brittle.

Poster 3-Superior; small tear on upper edge. Excellent!!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
