Societe Generale-Marianne French Poster 16" x 11" Artist: William Malherbe. Printed by the Defense Nationale. This small French poster was printed in 1918 and features Marianne standing over a dead German soldier with her sword drawn, as the sun sets over a farmer plowing his fields in the background. The translation of the poster is, "So that right may prevail. Subscribe to the 4th National Defense Loan." Marianne, as the symbol of France, has extremely old origins. She is a tall woman who wears a Phrygian cap on her head, the cap worn by freed Roman slaves, thus symbolizing freedom and liberty. People suggested that she be given a name based on the fact that she represented the common people, and the most common name given to women at this time was Marie-Anne; which later changed to just Marianne. The film noir actress Catherine Deneuve was a model for artwork depicting Marianne this century. A wonderful poster, which was one of the most popular of the posters printed in France. Do not let this one pass you by!

Condition: Good; this poster has been linen backed in the past which is adversely effecting the poster today, the linen is too large for the poster and is tearing away from the paper, the glue used to back the linen is dimpling the poster face, cockling from uneven rolling, colors look slightly washed out. This poster could be cleaned up to be fantastic!
