Rare 1932 Trial Model for a Device to Modify a Bolt Action Military Rifle to Pump Action. Cal. .30-06. Serial number 770750. Frank C. Watson of Chester, Pennsylvania had what he thought was a great idea to increase the rate of fire for standard military bolt-action rifles of the interwar period. Watson's idea was to apply the existing technology found on pump-handle rifles and shotguns to bolt-action rifles utilizing a device to allow the shooter to "reciprocate the bolt for removal of a shell and insertion of a fresh cartridge without taking the rifle from his shoulder, the same as if the rifle were a pump type." Watson applied for his patent on October 18, 1930 and was granted patent number 1,863,776 on June 21, 1932. Watson's trial rifle is built on a standard Springfield Model 1903 military bolt-action rifle. The rifle and stock have been significantly modified to accept the handle and slide ramp which makes it possible to load and eject cartridges. A paper tag affixed to the finger groove on the right side of the stock reads: "Frank C. Watson, Inv./ Patent No. 1863776/ And/ Pat-App-For". While the device still functions, it needs considerable assistance by the user to enable it to function as Watson envisioned it. It is little wonder that Watson's primitive design was overshadowed by John C. Garand's classic M-1. Still, it is a rare trials rifle with a unique place in the development of Twentieth Century military rifle development.

    Estimate: $1,200 - $1,500.
