Original Autobiographical Cartoon Art by Stars and Stripes Artist Private Abian A. "Wally" Wallgren, USMC. The six panel cartoon recounts in word and picture the military career of World War One's most famous American military cartoonist, Abian A. "Wally" Wallgren. The cartoon begins with the newspaper cartoonist's being assigned naval duties onboard a troopship headed to France despite Wallgren serving as a United States Marine Corps private. Two days after landing at St. Nazaire, France, Buck Private Wallgren was arrested for trying to smuggle two bottles of cognac into camp. It was the first of Wallgren's seven court-martials. He was appointed regimental sign painter; and for nearly nine months, he ranged the Western Front painting signs and stenciling equipment. He was assigned to the American Expeditionary Force soldier's newspaper, Stars and Stripes. Like Bill Maudlin, a generation later, Wallgren displayed an affinity for the common soldier and a disdain for M.P.s, sergeants, officers, and generals. The last frame pictures Wallgren meeting General John J. Pershing. After the war Wallgren served as a cartoonist for the American Legion Magazine, where this cartoon appeared in September 1930. The cartoon measures 14.5" x 19.25" and has American Legion Magazine production stamps and note on the verso. Light staining, else, fine.

    Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
