Join the Navy-The Service for Fighting Men. 28" x 42" Artist: R. F. Babcock. A fantastic image which may have provided inspiration for the final scene of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove. The scene shows a cheerful, patriotic southern pilot astride a bomb, as though it were a bareback bronco, as it falls to earth. He waves his cowboy hat wildly, hollering and whooping, followed only by a view of a single mushroom cloud as the credits roll. This image harkens to the poster so vividly that there can be little doubt of the connection. Ripe with masculine imagery and overtones, this poster appeals to the adventurous side of the American man and calls for him to enlist. A wonderful poster with perhaps one of the most striking images of the entire war.

Condition: Extra Fine- two minor tears that have been mended are present in the lower quadrant; linen backed.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
