    Description

Have You A Red Cross Service Flag (Lot of 3) 28" x 21" and 20" x 22" Artist: Jessie Wilcox Smith and unsigned. Printed for the American Red Cross. Three posters are featured in this lot, two drawn by the famous Jessie Wilcox Smith. This was her only war poster and thus is quite popular and in demand. Smith was a popular children's book illustrator. Her style echoes that of the famous poster artist Edward Penfield who produced such war posters as"Heroic Women of France" and "A Girl on Land Serves the Nations Needs." Her style has the flowing wispy strokes of art nouveau combined with the more boxy and cubic forms of the arts and crafts period. Most people became familiar with her art from the "Good Housekeeping" posters, which she illustrated from 1917 through 1933. Her drawings helped to shape what generations of children wore and played with. This poster features a small child hanging a Red Cross service flag in his window. A fantastic example of Wilcox-Smith's art and a wonderful Red Cross poster in general; a must have! The third poster in this lot does not have any art on it,a aside from the Red Cross logo, however, it does carry the same message of "Have You a Red Cross Service Flag?" It was printed to promote Red Cross classes and meeting centers. This lot is a great chance to own a privately printed Red Cross poster as well as the famous Wilcox-Smith service flag poster. Do not pass this up
